DIY-Harry Potter ornament! Platform 9 3/4

DIYHarry Potter

Geuss what? My birthday is in TWO days!! Can you tell that I’m a little bit excited?? Anyways I made an AWESOME ornament to continue with my DIY ornament series. It’s a Harry Potter ornament, and it took me forever!! But I absolutely think it was worth it and I’m so proud of it!

DIY-Harry Potter ornament! Platform 9 3/4

Supplies need:

  • Large red matte ornament (Dollar store)
  • Paint tray
  • Sponge brush
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Wax paper
  • Masking tape
  • Matte paint (I used Parchment colored, I didn’t want it white)
  • Cup (not pictured here)

This craft couldย be done with sticker paper, but I don’t have sticker paper so I made do with what I do have. ๐Ÿ™‚ Take a piece of wax paper and lay it shiny side up. Next, lay a piece of masking tape verticalย (shown in a later picture) this makes the removal process later tons easier! Then take strips of masking tape and lay them in a horizontal line with the edges overlapping.

Trace the cup on the middle of the stripes of tape with a pencil.

Poke a hole in the middle of the circle using your scissors.

Cut out the circle using your scissors. (Here you can see the vertical piece of tape underneath the horizontal pieces of tape.)

Peel the tape off of the wax paper and cut it down to a more manageable size. Otherwise, you will have tape sticking together and make a mess! Place the hole on the middle of your ornament, and make sure that the edges are sealed to the ornament. This willย give you a nice clean paint line.

Paint the parchment paint on the ornament using a stippling motion with the sponge brush. This is why you want a matte ornament because the paint doesn’t stick to a glossy one. I had to paint three layers to get a nice opaque coat.

Once the paint has totally dried remove the tape. See where the edges aren’t a clean line? That’s where the tape wasn’t sealed completely.

This is the part that took forever! Put in a movie and just be patient. ๐Ÿ™‚ Take your black Sharpie and draw a thick line around the perimeter of the paint circle. It should overlap the paint and the ornament. This will take care of any of the rough edges on the paint circle. Next, write your 9 3/4 in the middle of the paint circle using your Sharpie marker. I used a picture that I found on the internet as a guideline of how it should look.

What do you think? Are you going to make one? In total, I spent about 2 bucks on this ornament and I absolutely LOVE IT!! It’s one of my favorite ornaments on the tree!
